Going Full Circle

Months ago I downloaded a $0.99 iPhone app called 360Panorama made by a company called Occipital. After checking it out for a few minutes, it was filed away in folder called "photo" and left unused and neglected.

Our company SmithBucklin holds a few annual corporate events at hotels in Chicago and Washington, D.C. We usually take a few photos to use in the planning of future events. This year someone said, "wouldn't it be great if we could get a panorama image of this room." And it was then that I remembered the 360Panorama app already downloaded and ready to use. Within a few minutes, I was able to create a really nice interactive panorama that could be uploaded to a webpage and share with others. Creating a panorama is now "standard protocol" for the corporate events we hold.

The 360Panoram app is very easy to use. You slowly move the iPhone camera in a circle to fill in a grid and when complete, save the image. You can then upload it to a personal page provided by Occipital. Below is a panorama created near our office in Chicago.

Experimenting in Low Resolution

A few weeks ago, neighbor and friend Scott suggested that I give Instagram a try. With very little knowledge about this iPhone app, I was somewhat reluctant to jump into another social media platform. But, based on Scott's recommendation, I decided to download the free app.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover 15 million images (as of December 2011) neatly organized and searchable by users and hash tags. I quickly found really terrific low resolution photos of favorite subjects such as the Wrigley Building, Lake Michigan and Cape Cod. It seems that Instragram is for iPhone image-makers what Flickr, and other photo-sharing websites, are for DSLR photographers.

I posted a few images and within a week had a handful of "favorited" images and some "followers." Once comfortable with Instagram, I started incorporating other iPhone image software, such as Photogene and Photo Collage to work in concert with the Instagram tools. This image of the Wrigley Building in Chicago is an example of using Photo Collage before Instagram.

Also, Instagram can send iPhone generated images to other social media platforms inclduing: Twitter, Facebook and Flickr or by email. Here are a few more of the low resolution images from recent experimentation. Click on the image to see the full-size (612 X 612 pixel) image.

Boston Arts Academy Fundraiser

Donate to win an original photograph of Cape Cod

Mix together the Boston Arts Academy, the Boston Marathon and the special talents of two first cousins to come up with something a little different when it comes to fundraising. These nine photographic prints of Cape Cod are available exclusively to those who support Howard Lurie and the Boston Art Academy's 2012 Boston Marathon Team. The series of nine photographs were made by Jonathan Lurie during several visits to Cape Cod and selected by Howard as among his favorites. Each print is 15" wide by 10" tall and placed in a smooth, white, acid-free, archival mat board that is 20" wide by 16" tall and suitable for a standard-sized frame. The prints are valued at $100 each and signed on the back.

For many coffee-drinking folks, the line between the rest of the year and the holiday season is marked by the arrival of the red Starbucks cups and the special beverage recipes with peppermint and pumpkin spice. SmithBucklin employees honor the Popcorn Institute
On Friday, October 21, 2011, several SmithBucklin employees handed microwave popcorn to people walking by Pioneer Court in downtown Chicago. The promotion was designed to honor The Popcorn Institute, a SmithBucklin client organization since 1949.

The photos were shot with a Nikon D300 and a D70, and the videos were shot with an iPhone 4. Animoto was used to assemble and produce the video.

Apple Cider Century 2011

Participating in an organized bike ride during the grandness ofautumn is certainly a way to enjoy the countryside during the fleeting daysbefore winter.

Pack up the bikes and helmets, it’s time to enjoy the grandeur ofMidwest autumn in southwestern Michigan. The destination is Three Oaks and thestarting line of the Apple Cider Century. Better known as the ACC, the bike ridehas a variety of clearly marked routes ranging in distance from 15 to 100 miles. There’s a ride for everyone. Below is 18 seconds of "virtual" bike riding along the route.

For those who rode 25 miles or more, the route passed by Dinges' Farm, which in later September and October is the epicenter of all things autumn. Some of their offerings are documented below.

Fishing for Charity

Every year during the winter holiday season, SmithBucklin employees use a number of creative techniques to raise money for the worthy causes. In 2010, SmithBucklin presented a check for $32,000 to Kate Maehr, Executive Director & CEO of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. One of the most popular activities is an auction that features unique products and services such as "movie night" at the CEO's house, in-home cooking lessons, babysitting, etc. Using an online eBay-style website, employees bid and outbid each other, and all of the proceeds go to the food depository.

Since 2007, three SmithBucklin executives (Bret Kelsey, Mark Thorsby and this blog's author) have participated in the auction by donating a fishing expedition on Lake Michigan. The auction winner and two of his or her colleagues join the three sponsoring executives for a fun afternoon searching for salmon and trout on Lake Michigan. After five hours of fishing near Waukegan, Illinois, the catch is cleaned (by the captain) and divided up among the participants. Some of the fillets are taken home for grilling and others travel to the Boat House Pub & Eatery in Kenosha for smoking. *2007 was the final outing with Captain Jason. His fishing boat, the Finseeker sank to the bottom of Lake Michigan on May 30, 2008 during a freak, microburst storm. Captain Jason and his six customers waited out the storm in the cold Lake Michigan water before they were rescued by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter. The Ever Changing Rock

Background
On the northwest corner of Ridge Road and Thornwood Avenue in Wilmette, Illinois is a rock, but it is not an ordinary one. The history of the rock goes back to 1999 and the tradition, carried out by two families living nearby, was chronicled in an article by the Winnetka-Kenilworth Patch on January 24, 2011. It is known locally, as the "Ever Changing Rock."

For this blog entry, interspersed between her chronological images of the rock, Renee reveals her thoughts (in Q&A format) about the rock as well as photography, image-making and motivation. The oldest images are on the top of the entry and new ones will be added to the bottom as the story of the "Ever Changing Rock" continues.

Question: How did you get interested in the the "ever changing" rock?

Answer: The first "rock" that caught my eye was the shark. I love when objects in nature are used to create art and I immediately stopped my car to shoot that shark. It was done so beautifully and realistically that I was drawn to it. I had no clue at that time that a few weeks later, a different painting of that rock would appear and when it did, I was hooked on passing that corner every few weeks to see the amazing transformations taking place. It was a HUGE mystery to me..who painted it, who was motivated to change it...and that was the best part for me..the whole surprise element. Recently I was contacted by a writer who also took an interest in my photos of the rock and solved the mystery with her write up for Triblocal, and I was sort of disappointed to know about the rocks history yet found the backstory awesome at the same time. I'm still hugely surprised when it changes and happy to shoot and document it."

Question: What motivates you to create photographs?

Answer: For me, everyday life motivates me to create photographs. I like to think I have possibly seen something that you might have missed and that I am eager to share.

Question: How long have you been making photographs?
Answer: I've been shooting since I received my first Brownie Star Flash when I was seven years old, documenting my everyday life. I've tried jewelry making, drawing, painting, making pottery, and nothing has ever been as satisfying as taking images. I have my own wet darkroom and found shooting and developing B&W film a wonderful and creative process and fought using color or touching a digital camera for a very long time. I truly believed that I "saw" in B&W. My daughter used only a digital camera and left it home one day. I decided to use it it and it changed both the way I "saw" and shot. Color can be exciting and moving in ways I never believed. I might change a digital photo from color to B&W if it meets a need, but I do not use Photoshop to alter my images in any other way.

Question: What are your favorite types of images?

Answer: I basically shoot outdoors, and those are my favorite images. Nature excites and motivates me and being outside is important to me in any type of weather. I began shooting outdoor portraits in my work and then moving on to people with their pets (outdoors only). Then shooting only their pets because they never complain about how their hair looks or why I haven't retouched an image. They just sit, smile and behave. Beyond my work, I shoot for myself.

I never go anywhere without at least one camera, usually two, and never go a day without fitting in a photo shoot.

Question: Please share some of your successes.
Answer: At the beginning of each year, I set a wish list for myself. My first was "oh I wish I could have an exhibit." Three months later I was contacted by the Lincoln Park Cultural Center and asked if I would like to put up my own exhibit for a month in their space. It was a heady and wonderful experience to stand in a room, surrounded by my own work on display. Another year, I wished to be in a group show and was accepted to a winter Around the Coyote show in short order. Amazing, and so much fun. I was lucky enough to be accepted for several years. Next I joined the Chicago Artist's Coalition and wished to be accepted into one of their shows. I was accepted on honored to win Curator's Choice for my image. Another wish, another win, as Best of Show at a fundraiser for The Anti Cruelty Society. Recently I was asked to be a part of a wonderful book entitled Found Faces and am thrilled now to be published. Wonderful wishes, wonderful surprises, and all through something that I wake up excited to do over and over again. I've been most fortunate.

Celebrating 10,000 Views

This high dynamic range image (composite of three images using Photomatix HDR software) of the Chicago River was posted to Flickr on December 20, 2007. On September 3, 2011 the image achieved a milestone of 10,000 views with 42 comments, 176 faves and 10 Flickr gallery appearances.

Dusted off the Pentax ZX-50 from the basement before spending some time on Cape Cod. Purchased new in 1999 for about USD $500 as a two lens kit. Today, the ZX-50 can be found as a "Buy It Now" item on eBay for USD $15.

Intrigued by the new Kodak Ektar 100 film, the camera went to the beach to protect the expensive digital camera. Here are some of the results. They certainly surpassed the initial expectation.

3rd Annual Madison Mini-Marathon

Saturday, August 20, 2011, Madison, Wisconsin Early wake-up and arrival at the Memorial Union at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Weather is cool, perfect for a the Madison Mini-Marathon, half marathon race.

6:55 A.M. Fascinating glove shoes in the starting corral. The national anthem, runners are ready. Pause, pause...race delayed due to weather. Time to close the course.

7:10 A.M. Back in the Tripp Commons to wait out the thunderstorm cell with the Milwaukee Brewer's Sausage Race characters.

8:25 A.M. Officials announce start of 8:30, so back to the starting coral, still raining hard.

8:30 A.M. The 2011 Madison Mini-Marathon begins.

From a participant's perspective, the race was very well run. The communication about the delay and new start time was excellent. The course and all the little "extras" made it a very enjoyable morning. Click here to see the map of the course.

Surfing Lessons

August 3, 2011 10:00 AM, Wellfleet, Massachusetts Surfing lessons for the teenagers at White Crest Beach with an instructor from the local surf shop, Sickday. Naturally, the proud parents chose to hang around on the beach with cameras. Here are a few of the images.
